battle of the thesis, round 2

On Friday, March 2 at 9:00am I am scheduled to present my thesis. And before that I need to hand in the second draft of the paper, which still needs quite a lot of additions made to it. To deal with these deadlines I have declared myself a hermit for the next few days.

Conveniently, Shelley and Kenda are both out of town which means that I have the house to myself. So far I like being alone. I put on my records really loud and dance and leave doors open and do silly things (when I'm not studying.)

I think I can see how people who live in isolation go crazy. And I have only been alone for one day so far.

T minus 3 days until this place is inhabited by another soul. T minus 7.5 days until I present my thesis.

surprise! Seattle!: a week full of friends and family

One week ago I recieved a phone call from ma and pa saying that they were coming to Vancouver on Tuesday. Tuesday! Five days ago I said hello and ate apple crisp with them while they admired my place.

Four days ago (Valentines Day) entailed a romantic day trip to Seattle with my parents. We spent it wandering Pike's Place Market, eating Korean BBQ (mmmm) and mosying around the top and bottom of the Space Needle, admiring the view of the Seattle cityscape.

Three days ago we drove up through Washington, did a bit of classic American outlet mall shopping, and talked and talked and talked with relatives who fed us well and clued us in on their newest health crazes.

Two days ago we walked through Stanley Park and surveyed the mass damage, but saw so much renewed life within the devastation.

And then, after a big Indian buffet my parents went on their way with enough food in their belly to sustain them for a good portion of their train ride home.

And I went and said hello to Justine (and others) at Heidi the hostess' exquisite dessert and music soiree. Old and new friends, live music, dessert and wine are always a good combination.

One day ago Justine and I hung out all day and played with fire and drank bubble tea sans bubbles.
Today I said goodbye to Justine and worked the whole day at the senior's center. St. John the Divine came and laid his hands on us and we did communion. I thought about refusing Jesus' blood since the wine cup went around to all the sick seniors first, but then I decided that this might be as close to martyrdom as I will get.

ps. I wrote this yesterday. This week seems to be a little more mellow.

another year older.

Yesterday was my birthday. I now write to you as a 24-year old. 24 seems to be a good number so far. Nice and even. Two dozen. Not a prime number like 23 (which I didn't like so much,) but a number with many multiples.

It has also been a good age so far. I spent much of yesterday day relaxing and talking to friends and family on the phone. The evening was spent being spoiled by friends here, eating Ethiopian and having drinks and listening to live jazz.

Margaret and Scott and Joshua & co. came to celebrate! And Scott's birthday is in a few days, so next week we are going to have a combined celebration. You are all invited.
